Brisbane Commute Overview: Saturday, 14 February 2026

Commuters and visitors in Brisbane should prepare for a complex travel landscape this Saturday, 14 February. While the weekend typically sees a lighter flow of traffic, the combination of major infrastructure maintenance, a high-profile international event at Suncorp Stadium, and Valentine's Day festivities will likely lead to significant localized congestion. Public transport users, in particular, face substantial disruptions on several key rail lines, making forward planning essential for those heading into the CBD or towards the coast.

Public Transport: Major Weekend Rail Closures

Translink has confirmed extensive track closures across the network to facilitate ongoing maintenance and Cross River Rail integration. For Saturday, the following disruptions are in place:

  • Beenleigh and Gold Coast Lines: A major weekend track closure is in effect between Boggo Road and Varsity Lakes. Timetabled railbuses will replace train services for the duration of the day. Travelers heading to or from the Gold Coast should allow for at least 60 minutes of additional travel time.
  • Shorncliffe Line: Services are suspended between Northgate and Shorncliffe stations. Rail replacement buses will be operating to assist passengers in the northern suburbs.
  • Inner-City Diversions: While some services continue to run through the city, certain lines may experience altered platforms or minor delays due to the surrounding maintenance schedule.

Event Traffic and Roadworks

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo continues its season at Suncorp Stadium this Saturday. Expect heavy traffic in the Milton and Paddington areas throughout the afternoon and late evening. Specific event-day parking restrictions will be in effect, and motorists are advised to avoid Caxton Street and Milton Road if they are not attending the event. Translink is operating special event bus diversions to accommodate the crowds.

Additionally, several roadwork projects remain active across the city:

  • Albion: Construction and lane closures continue on Hudson Road and Sandgate Road. Northbound traffic may experience merging delays during peak midday hours.
  • Annerley: Ongoing utility works on Ipswich Road are causing intermittent lane restrictions near the intersection with Waterton Street.
  • Dining Precincts: Due to Valentine’s Day, high pedestrian and vehicle volumes are expected in South Bank, Fortitude Valley, and the CBD from 5:00 PM onwards. Valet zones and ride-share pick-up points in these areas will likely be congested.

Travel Recommendations

If you are planning a Valentine's Day dinner or attending the spectacle at Suncorp Stadium, consider departing earlier than usual. Public transport remains the best option for city access, despite the rail closures, provided you check the updated railbus timetables. For those driving, utilizing the Inner City Bypass (ICB) or Legacy Way may help bypass the expected surface-level congestion in Milton and Albion.
