Beenleigh Line Express Changes and CBD Detours: Monday Commute Update

Morning Commute Overview for Monday, March 9

Good morning, Brisbane. As we kick off the second week of March, commuters are advised to prepare for a mix of scheduled rail disruptions and ongoing roadwork projects across the metropolitan area. While the recent opening of the Adelaide Street Tunnel continues to provide significant relief for bus services, several major construction projects are entering critical phases today.

Rail Alerts: Beenleigh Line and Moorooka Station

The most significant impact for public transport users today involves the Beenleigh line. As part of the ongoing Cross River Rail supporting works, several peak-hour services will run express today, Monday, March 9, and tomorrow, Tuesday, March 10. Trains will skip stops at Dutton Park, Fairfield, Yeronga, Yeerongpilly, Salisbury, and Rocklea. Commuters traveling to or from these stations should allow for extra travel time and check the latest timetables for connecting bus or rail options.

Additionally, Moorooka station remains completely closed for major accessibility upgrades and Cross River Rail construction. This closure is expected to last well into next year. Commuters who usually use Moorooka station are directed to use the dedicated rail replacement bus services or alternative transport hubs nearby.

CBD Road Closures and Surface Impacts

Inner-city motorists should navigate with caution as several long-term closures remain in effect to facilitate underground station construction:

  • Albert Street: The section between Mary Street and Charlotte Street remains closed to all vehicular traffic.
  • Mary Street: The eastbound lane adjacent to the primary worksite is closed; vehicles traveling eastbound are diverted around the block.
  • George Street: A temporary bus lane closure near the Roma Street precinct continues to cause minor delays during peak morning hours.
  • Roma Street: Expect lane narrowing and intermittent changes between Garrick and Herschel Streets, though eastbound access is currently maintained.

Motorway and Suburban Roadworks

On the roads, major arteries are seeing heavy but moving traffic this morning. However, be aware of the following hotspots:

  • Logan Motorway: Planned nightly roadworks continue. While lanes will be open during the day, the eastbound section between Formation Street and Boundary Road will close again from 8:00 PM tonight until 5:00 AM tomorrow.
  • Albion: Significant construction on Sandgate Road and excavation works near Hudson Road are causing bottleneck conditions during the school run and morning peak.
  • Annerley: Ongoing works on Ipswich Road near Cornwall Street continue to restrict traffic flow; please consider the M3 as an alternative if heading north.
  • Acacia Ridge: Multiple projects on Learoyd Road and Mortimer Road may slow down local freight and commuter traffic throughout the day.

Public transport patronage remains high following the success of the 50-cent fare initiative, with Translink reporting roughly a 27% increase in bus use. Commuters are encouraged to utilize the Translink app for real-time tracking, especially with the express rail changes in place today.
