Tuesday Traffic and Public Transport Update: 31 March 2026

Commuters across Brisbane should prepare for a busy Tuesday as several major infrastructure projects reach critical phases. While the city's arterial roads are currently flowing at typical weekday capacities, significant ongoing works in the CBD and the southern rail corridor are necessitating detours and altered travel patterns. With the school holiday period and major bridge maintenance approaching later this week, today serves as a vital window for residents to finalize their transit plans.

Rail Network: Rebuilds and Service Adjustments

Public transport users on the southern lines continue to be the most affected by the current Cross River Rail station accessibility program. The following alerts are in place for today:

  • Moorooka Station Closure: Moorooka station remains completely closed to all commuters as part of its total rebuild. This closure is expected to last until late 2027. Passengers are advised to use alternative bus connections or nearby stations.
  • Shorncliffe Line Evening Testing: For those traveling late this evening, be aware that signalling system testing is ongoing. From 7:45 pm until the final service tonight, trains will not operate between Northgate and Shorncliffe stations. Rail replacement buses will be in operation during this window.
  • Southside Station Upgrades: Heavy construction activity continues at Salisbury, Yeerongpilly, and Dutton Park stations. While these stations remain operational, commuters should expect changed access to platforms and localized footway diversions.

CBD and Roadway Impacts

In the heart of the city, the Albert Street station project has entered a new phase of 'Green Spine' construction. Motorists and pedestrians should note the following disruptions:

  • Elizabeth and Charlotte Streets: Temporary lane closures remain in effect on Elizabeth Street and Charlotte Street near the Albert Street intersections. These closures are expected to persist throughout the year to facilitate the installation of station canopy structures and streetscape upgrades.
  • Ipswich Road, Annerley: Scheduled road maintenance and excavation works are occurring near the Cornwall Street intersection. Motorists should anticipate minor delays during off-peak hours.
  • Sandgate Road, Albion: Ongoing construction near the Albion rail overpass continues to restrict traffic flow. Speed limits are reduced in the work zone for the safety of crews and drivers.

Upcoming Alert: Story Bridge Maintenance

While the Story Bridge is fully operational today, the Brisbane City Council has confirmed that major maintenance will begin this Thursday, 2 April, at 9:00 pm. Commuters who regularly use the Bradfield Highway are encouraged to use today and tomorrow to trial alternative routes via the Captain Cook Bridge or the Clem7 tunnel before the partial lane closures begin.

For real-time updates throughout the day, commuters are encouraged to monitor the Translink journey planner and official traffic monitoring services to account for any unexpected incidents on the Gateway or Pacific Motorways.
