Mid-Week Commute: Major Busway and Arterial Updates

Brisbane commuters are advised to prepare for a series of scheduled disruptions this Wednesday, 1 April 2026. As the city approaches the Easter school holiday period, several major infrastructure projects are ramping up, affecting both public transport reliability and key road corridors. While the morning peak is expected to flow relatively well on the major motorways, significant evening changes and ongoing lane closures in the inner city will require extra travel time.

Public Transport: Inner Northern Busway Evening Closure

The most significant impact for public transport users today is the scheduled Wednesday evening closure of the Inner Northern Busway. Translink has confirmed that services will be affected from late evening, requiring buses to divert onto local streets between the CBD and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH). Commuters should expect delays of up to 15 minutes for northern-bound services during this period.

Additionally, the following public transport notices are in effect:

  • Moorooka Station: Remains fully closed for accessibility rebuilding. Passengers should continue using the StationLink route 19, which connects to the PA Hospital busway station and Rocklea station.
  • Loganlea: A temporary stop closure on Armstrong Road begins today, 1 April, impacting local bus routes in the area.
  • Southside Rebuilds: Ongoing construction continues at Salisbury, Rocklea, Yeerongpilly, Yeronga, and Fairfield stations. While these remain operational (excluding Moorooka), minor platform changes may occur.

Roadworks and CBD Lane Restrictions

The Cross River Rail project continues to reshape traffic flow in the heart of Brisbane. Motorists should be particularly aware of lane restrictions that may cause congestion during the afternoon peak:

  • Mary Street: The eastbound lane adjacent to the construction site remains closed to all vehicles.
  • Elizabeth and Charlotte Streets: Temporary lane closures are in place near the Albert Street precinct. These restrictions are expected to cause slow-moving traffic around the CBD core.
  • Albion Arterials: Significant roadworks have commenced this week on Kingsford Smith Drive and Sandgate Road. Lane narrowing and reduced speed limits are in effect between Albion and Eagle Junction.
  • Ipswich Road: Planned maintenance and 'other' works are currently active through Annerley, impacting traffic flow between Cornwall Street and the junction near the PA Hospital.

Looking Ahead: Story Bridge and Major Rail Closures

While today remains relatively clear on the Bradfield Highway, motorists are warned that essential maintenance on the Story Bridge begins tomorrow night, Thursday, 2 April. This will start with a single southbound lane closure from 9:00 PM. Furthermore, a massive rail shutdown is scheduled to begin this Friday, 3 April, affecting nearly all South East Queensland train lines. Commuters are urged to use the Translink journey planner today to verify their alternative arrangements for the remainder of the week.
