Public Transport: Sunday Timetables in Effect

As Brisbane observes the Easter Monday public holiday today, 6 April 2026, commuters and holidaymakers should be aware that all Translink services—including buses, trains, and ferries—are operating on a Sunday or Public Holiday timetable. This includes the Brisbane Metro M1 service, which is running at reduced frequency compared to a standard weekday. Passengers are encouraged to check the Translink journey planner before departing, as some early morning and late-night services may not be available.

Due to ongoing Cross River Rail integration works, significant track closures are in place across several lines. Rail replacement buses are currently operating between Yeerongpilly and Roma Street to allow for signalling testing and station fit-outs at the new underground Albert Street and Boggo Road sites. Commuters should allow at least an additional 30 minutes of travel time if their route involves these sections of the network.

Major Roadworks and Infrastructure Projects

Major construction remains active at the Centenary Bridge in Jindalee. While site activity is reduced for the public holiday, the duplication project continues to impact traffic flow. Speed restrictions are in place, and motorists are advised that narrow lanes remain on both the northbound and southbound spans. This area is expected to experience significant bottlenecks during the afternoon as residents return from the western corridors.

In the inner city, the multi-year Story Bridge restoration project is ongoing. While all lanes are currently open, motorists should be mindful of scaffolding and reduced shoulder space. Periodic maintenance may cause short-term diversions on the bridge footpaths, affecting cyclists and pedestrians using the bridge to access the CBD.

Regional Travel: Heavy Return Traffic Predicted

The biggest challenge for motorists today will be the heavy congestion on major arteries as South East Queenslanders return from the Easter long weekend. Transport authorities expect peak congestion on the M1 (Pacific Motorway) northbound from the Gold Coast and the Bruce Highway southbound from the Sunshine Coast starting from 1:00 PM and lasting well into the evening.

Specific hotspots to watch include the Gateway Motorway merger at Drewvale and the Bruce Highway interchange at North Lakes. Motorists are urged to plan their return trips for earlier in the morning or later tonight to avoid the heaviest delays. Keep a safe following distance and remain patient, as the high volume of traffic is likely to result in stop-start conditions throughout the afternoon.
