Travel Alert: Massive Rail Shutdown and Story Bridge Delays for Easter Saturday

Brisbane commuters and Easter holidaymakers are facing a significant challenge on the transport network this Saturday, April 4, 2026. With the city’s largest-ever rail maintenance program in full swing and essential works continuing on the Story Bridge, travel times are expected to be significantly longer across the metropolitan area. Authorities are urging residents to avoid non-essential travel or to plan for extreme delays.

Network-Wide Rail Shutdown

The 23-day "Easter Shutdown" is currently in its second day, impacting eight major rail lines simultaneously. Translink has confirmed that most train services across South East Queensland are suspended to allow for Cross River Rail integration and track upgrades. High-frequency rail-replacement buses are operating, but they are subject to road traffic conditions. Key disruptions for Saturday include:

  • Replacement Buses: Buses are replacing trains between Gympie North and Caboolture, Northgate and Bowen Hills, and Banoon and Boggo Road.
  • Lines Affected: Commuters on the Airport, Beenleigh, Caboolture, Doomben, Gold Coast, Redcliffe Peninsula, Shorncliffe, and Sunshine Coast lines will experience major alterations.
  • Airtrain Impacts: There is no direct train service to Brisbane Airport from the CBD. Travellers must take a train to Eagle Junction and transfer to a rail-replacement bus to reach the terminals. Officials recommend allowing an additional 60 to 90 minutes for airport transfers to avoid missing flights.

Roadworks and Story Bridge Restrictions

Motorists are also facing hurdles as the Story Bridge undergoes a critical restoration phase. A continuous single southbound lane closure is in effect, which is expected to cause bottlenecking throughout the day. Heavy congestion is likely on the Bradfield Highway and surrounding arterial roads in Fortitude Valley and Kangaroo Point.

  • Story Bridge: The single southbound lane closure will remain active until April 11. Motorists are encouraged to use the Captain Cook Bridge or the Clem7 tunnel as alternative river crossings.
  • Local Works: Significant roadworks are also impacting traffic flow on Kingsford Smith Drive and Hudson Road in Albion, as well as several sections of Ipswich Road in Annerley.

Commuter Advice

As this is the first weekend of the Easter school holidays, traffic volume is naturally higher than usual. If you are heading to the airport, the CBD, or the coast, it is vital to start your journey much earlier than planned. Check the Translink journey planner for the most recent bus replacement schedules and monitor real-time traffic conditions before getting behind the wheel.
