Public Holiday Notice: Easter Sunday 2026

Brisbane City Council reminds residents and visitors that today, Sunday 5 April 2026, is an official public holiday for Easter Sunday. As a result, several council-operated services and facilities are observing altered schedules or temporary closures. Residents are encouraged to plan their movements and travel accordingly to avoid inconvenience during the holiday period.

Public Facility and Library Closures

All Brisbane City Council libraries are currently closed for the duration of the Easter long weekend. This closure remains in effect through Monday 6 April, with normal operating hours scheduled to resume on Tuesday 7 April 2026. During this holiday period, residents should be aware of the following:

  • After-hours return chutes and book bins are closed at all branches; patrons are requested to retain borrowed items until libraries reopen on Tuesday.
  • Online library services, including digital eBook loans and catalogue access, remain available 24/7 via the council website.
  • The 24/7 library lockers at selected locations, including New Farm, Carina, Holland Park, and Mitchelton, remain operational for the collection of pre-arranged holds.

Transport and Infrastructure Maintenance

Significant maintenance and network upgrades are currently impacting travel across the city. Commuters and motorists are advised to allow for substantial delays and consider alternative routes for the following works:

  • Story Bridge Maintenance: Essential restoration and concrete repair works are ongoing on the Story Bridge. A single southbound lane remains closed to facilitate these inspections. Full bridge closures are scheduled for the following weekend, but motorists should expect congestion today.
  • Rail Network Shutdown: Queensland Rail has implemented a major shutdown across the majority of the south-east network to facilitate critical signalling upgrades and Cross River Rail construction. This includes the Airtrain line to Brisbane Airport. Rail replacement buses are in operation between major hubs, but commuters should allow at least an extra 60 to 90 minutes for journeys.

Park Upgrades and Restricted Access

Council maintenance crews are currently active across several suburban parks. While most green spaces remain open, specific play and picnic areas are restricted:

  • Bulimba Memorial Park: The playground area is closed for equipment upgrades and shade structure installation until mid-April.
  • Wills Street Park (Coorparoo): Playground renovation works continue, with the primary play fort area cordoned off for safety until approximately 30 April.
  • Dollis Street Park (Rocklea): Significant vegetation maintenance and weed management are underway. Residents are asked to avoid active work zones until 24 April.
  • Svoboda Park (Kuraby): Picnic facility upgrades, including the installation of new shelters, are nearing completion but remain closed to public use today.

Public Health Advisory: Measles Alert

Queensland Health maintains a public health alert for the Brisbane region following confirmed cases of measles. Residents who were present at the Brisbane International Airport arrivals terminal on 19 March are urged to monitor for symptoms until mid-April. Symptoms include fever, lethargy, and a blotchy red rash. Anyone exhibiting symptoms should contact their GP or 13-HEALTH for advice before attending a clinic in person to prevent further community transmission.
