Legislative Assembly Concludes March Sitting with Focus on Olympic Infrastructure

The Queensland Parliament has convened at Parliament House in Brisbane today, Thursday, 26 March 2026, for the final day of the current legislative sitting block. Under the leadership of Premier David Crisafulli, the LNP government is navigating a heavy agenda dominated by major shifts in Olympic planning and a deepening fuel supply crisis affecting the state.

While the Brisbane City Council remains in its autumn recess, state-level politics have taken center stage in the capital. Key discussions today are centered on the following major government initiatives and legislative debates:

  • Olympic Stadium and Emissions Targets: Following yesterday's revelation of new designs for the 2032 Olympic main stadium at Victoria Park, the chamber is today debating the $3.8 billion price tag and the decision to scrap the "climate positive" emissions targets for the Games. The government defended the move as a cost-saving measure necessary to prioritize local infrastructure over international environmental benchmarks.
  • Youth Justice Legislation: Debate continues on the "Adult Crime, Adult Time" amendment bill. The legislation, which expands to cover 45 specific youth crime offences, is a central pillar of the government’s 2026 safety strategy. Although a public committee briefing is scheduled for tomorrow, members of the House are today debating the immediate implementation of strengthened police powers in business precincts.
  • Fuel Shortage Response: With current reports indicating that 55 Queensland service stations are out of diesel and 35 have run out of regular unleaded petrol, the government is being pressured to activate emergency powers. Energy Minister Chris Bowen has provided updates to the assembly regarding national fuel reserves, as the state grapples with rising prices following international conflict.

Brisbane City Council Status

While the state government remains active, the Brisbane City Council is currently observing its scheduled autumn recess. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and the council committees concluded their most recent session on 17 March and are not expected to resume formal ordinary meetings until 12 May 2026. However, City Hall remains active with community events, including the Lord Mayor’s concert series which recently highlighted Brisbane’s local musical talent.

Today's parliamentary session is expected to conclude late this evening, with the next sitting dates for the Legislative Assembly scheduled for late April. Observers at Parliament House noted that the current debates regarding the Victoria Park redevelopment will likely be the primary focus of the upcoming regional cabinet meetings.
