Friday Commute Overview

Good morning, Brisbane. As we head into Friday, 6 March 2026, commuters should prepare for several significant infrastructure-related changes. While the morning peak is expected to flow relatively well on major arteries, the late-afternoon and evening periods will see the start of major weekend works on the western corridor. Additionally, long-term rail projects continue to reshape the network, particularly on the southern lines.

Roadworks and Major Arteries

The most significant impact today involves the Centenary Motorway. Starting from 8:00 PM tonight, the Department of Transport and Main Roads will implement a temporary closure of the Sinnamon Road on-ramp. This closure is necessary to facilitate ongoing construction at the Centenary Bridge site and will remain in place until early Monday morning. Motorists travelling northbound toward Fig Tree Pocket should expect reduced speed limits and potential delays as traffic merges around the work zone.

In the Brisbane CBD, there is some relief for bus commuters: the George Street bus lane near the Herschel Street intersection is scheduled to reopen at 6:00 AM this morning following signaling and utility work. However, the Herschel Street shared user path remains closed to both pedestrians and cyclists as part of an eight-week construction block for the Cross River Rail precinct. Cyclists are advised to continue using the dedicated diversion via George Street.

On the Bruce Highway corridor, motorists in the Griffin area are reminded that access to Goodrich Road East from Dohles Rocks Road is now permanently closed. This change is part of the broader motorway upgrade to allow for new southbound exit ramps. Local traffic should utilize the Silvereye Drive intersection as an alternative.

Public Transport Alerts

Rail commuters on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines should continue to plan for timetable adjustments. Due to ongoing work between Dutton Park and Salisbury, a modified timetable is in effect until 10 March. Notably, Moorooka station remains completely closed for major rebuild works and is not expected to reopen until late 2027. Passengers are advised to use the station's dedicated rail replacement bus services or nearby alternative stations.

For those travelling this evening, the Shorncliffe line will undergo mid-week evening track closures starting at approximately 9:00 PM. Rail replacement buses will operate between Northgate and Shorncliffe to allow for signaling system testing. Commuters are encouraged to check the Translink journey planner for specific bus departure times.

Commuter Advice

  • Plan Ahead: If you are heading home after 8:00 PM tonight via the Centenary Motorway, allow an extra 15 minutes of travel time.
  • Check Connections: With the Brisbane Metro now in its first full year of operation, many inner-city bus routes have changed. Ensure you are familiar with the current high-frequency transfer points at the Cultural Centre and Roma Street.
  • Safety: Obey all temporary 40km/h speed limits near construction sites in Acacia Ridge and Jindalee, where increased worker activity is expected throughout the day.
